Century City Mall
Light matters
Since its days of origin, Man’s ability to harness the power of artificial light has transformed its primary purpose; thereby allowing the role of light to evolve from the practical arena into the creative realm. Today, it is not enough that light delivers functionality. It must also perform aesthetically. This makes designing with light more complex and more exciting as we begin to explore its creative possibilities.
Directly appointed by Century Properties as the lighting consultants for the retail project, Century City Mall, we set out to do exactly this. Our scope of work covered the lighting design of all exterior façade and interior public spaces as well as the full implementation of the design. Working closely with the design architects of Broadway Malyan, we experimented with how light can meaningfully relate to the architectural design while tying in with its site context. The end result is a visual narrative that relates brand identity and enhances one’s experience of space.

To economically achieve brightness and sophistication, we used fluorescent technology with high quality diffusers encased in a simple plaster detail.
Fusing aesthetics and functionality
Located in the affluent heart of Makati (Manila), Century City Mall is part of the larger Century City development. Envisioned as a prominent retail destination, the mall is poised to meet the leisure and entertainment needs of its high-end clientele. In this context, its façade with its bold linear accents and gloss envelop is designed to be trendy and sleek yet sophisticated. With this in mind, we incorporated dynamic highlights to the exterior, effectively tying the retail development to the external lighting of the surrounding residential blocks. This allows Century City Mall to join the wider urbanscape of Makati while enabling it to stand out as a commercial establishment.
Within the mall, the lighting design forms linear elements that run throughout. Once again, the expression of light takes on both aesthetic and practical functions. By echoing the stylistic tone of the exterior, we used light to create a seamless identity for Century City Mall. By allowing the lighting fixtures to run the length of the retail corridor, we not only create depth but also brighten every space. The latter is especially so for the basement levels of the mall. Furthest away from the skylight features, the basement is the dullest space within the mall. To induce footfall in the basement, we strategically positioned artificial lighting where skylight features are so as to create the illusion of deep-reaching daylight.
